The boats of the Couronians and Vikings were similar in construction; these boats sailed the northern waters and the Baltic Sea from the 8th to the 13th centuries. They had oars and a square woollen sail on the mast. The ship was steered with an oar, and the stems were decorated with woodcarvings, usually heads of animals. Shields were affixed to the painted sides.
